A true David vs. Goliath story of how the 14th century Scottish 'Outlaw King' Robert the Bruce used cunning and bravery to defeat the much larger and better equipped occupying English army.

After being declared "Outlaw" by the occupying English Empire, Robert the Bruce (Chris Pine) raises an army of Scottish fighters in rebellion. Twists and turns all across the Scottish countryside lead this film on an epic, "true to historical events", journey that captures heroism at its core!

Synopsis Outlaw King 2018

The film opens outside Stirling Castle in Scotland in 1304. Robert the Bruce, his rival John Comyn, and other Scottish nobility swear fealty to King Edward I of England. William Wallace, the infamous Scottish rebel, having been defeated at the Battle of Falkirk (1298) has gone into hiding and the English have won the upper hand in the fight against their northern neighbor's attempt at independence.

With no other choice, many of the Scottish lords have decided to submit once more to English rule. For his part, Robert is promised the hand of Elizabeth de Burgh - an Irish noblewoman whose father is a close friend and ally to Edward I. When one Scotsman - James Douglas - petitions the King for the return of his family's lands and titles, Edward I refuses on the grounds that his father was traitor.

As the noblemen begin to depart, Robert is challenged to a friendly duel by the English King's son Edward II whom he half-heartedly fights to a standstill before the Prince is summoned by his father and all are invited to watch as Edward I seals the treaty with the Scots by launching Greek fire at the nearby castle and telling his commanders to accept the fortress' surrender now.

Back home, Robert and his father begin to deal with the realities of their submission and Elizabeth soon arrives to officially marry Robert (who chooses not to consummate the marriage). As the months go by, Elizabeth slowly begins to warm up to Robert and his daughter Marjorie while the strain of England's rule takes its toll on the common people.

One night, Robert's father recounts stories from his youth when he fought alongside King Edward in the Crusades and, despite believing him to be a friend, ultimately regrets trusting him. Robert's father then passes away shortly afterwards, making him the new lord of Annandale.

Some time later in 1305, Robert and his retinue travel to the border city of Berwick to deliver taxes owed to England. After doing so, Robert and his men are swept up in a mob of people who've gathered in the marketplace to view the arm of William Wallace - the rebel having finally been caught and subsequently hanged, drawn, and quartered. As the mass of people begin to shout and threaten the English soldiers, violence erupts and Robert watches in horror as the English begin cutting down Scottish commoners who respond in kind.

Returning to his lands, Robert gathers together his friends and allies and shares the news of Wallace's execution and his renewed desire to cast off English rule once again - ultimately deciding to call together the Scottish nobility and make his case for a second attempt at independence. While some nobles side with him, others - namely John Comyn and those that support him - refuse.

Robert is eventually confronted by Comyn in a church and the two exchange tense words. When the latter shares his intention of informing King Edward of his plans, Robert draws Comyn's knife from his belt and stabs him in the neck - killing him at the altar.

Seeking absolution for his actions, Robert confesses the murder to the Scottish clergy who in turn offer him what he seeks in exchange for agreeing to be named King of Scotland and leading the country against the English. Robert accepts the offer and is crowned King in the village of Scone, encountering James Douglas along the way who pledges his service to Robert in exchange for the promise that his family's lands and titles will be returned to him.

Back in England, Edward I receives word of Comyn's murder and Robert's crowning - infuriating him. Unable to lead the army himself due to his deteriorating health he charges Aymer de Valence to deal with the Scots who've been sighted in force near Perth. When Prince Edward II pleads with his father to let him prove himself by killing or capturing Robert, the King reluctantly agrees and knights hundreds of men to accompany his son, ordering them to ride under the banner of a dragon - ignoring the tenants of chivalry and showing no mercy to the enemy and/or their supporters.

Robert meets with de Valence in the field and seeing his force heavily outnumbered challenges the English commander to single combat to decide the victor. De Valence accepts but tells Robert that since it's a Sunday the duel will have to take place the following day. That night, the Scots celebrate and prepare themselves for battle encamped in a nearby forest and after Robert and Elizabeth share a quiet moment they passionately consummate their marriage. Afterwards, as they put Marjorie to bed Robert makes Elizabeth promise that no matter what happens to him she will protect his daughter.

Hearing strange noises outside their tent, Robert goes to investigate and volleys of fire-arrows begin to rain down on the Scottish camp. De Valence, choosing not to hold to their agreement, has moved his forces into range and attacked under cover of darkness (Battle of Methven). As the English continue their attack and rout most of the Scots, Robert entrusts his brother Neil to escort Elizabeth and Marjorie to Kildrummy Castle and seek refuge from Lord Fraser - a friend and ally.

Despite putting up a furious resistance, Robert is pulled away from the inevitable defeat and escapes with only about fifty of his men still alive.

Beaten, bloodied, and desperate, Robert and his men aimlessly wander the Scottish countryside eventually deciding to make for the home islands of one of his allies - Angus MacDonald - in the hopes of replenishing his forces. Along the way they're intercepted by a small force from the MacDougall clan who, despite being supporters of the murdered Comyn, allow them to pass by unharmed.

Elsewhere, Neil delivers Elizabeth and Marjorie to Lord Fraser's castle - finding some respite from the quickly deteriorating situation Robert's crowning has created.

When Robert and his men come to a river, they attempt to cross only to be ambushed by the MacDougalls. In the melee, Robert's brother Alexander is impaled by a spear and his body left behind as the outlaw king's forces dwindle further. Eventually finding their way to the islands the small group of soldiers rest and recover and those who're able to pledge to join his forces.

Back on the mainland, Prince Edward II cuts a bloody path through Scotland mercilessly killing Robert's supporters and pillaging or capturing towns and villages - including Robert's own castle. When he arrives at Perth he berates de Valence for letting the outlaw escape and his ineptitude in tracking him down. Shortly after, a loyal Scottish nobleman arrives and informs the English of the whereabouts of Elizabeth and Marjorie and the Prince gathers his men to confront Lord Fraser.

Arriving at Kildrummy, the Prince commands Lord Fraser to hand over Robert's wife and daughter lest he must attack. While the lord buys some time by claiming ignorance to their whereabouts, Neil sneaks Elizabeth and Marjorie outside the walls and tells them to wait and hide in the forest until he can send men to protect them and spirit them away. After unleashing a hail of fire-arrows into the castle, Lord Fraser offers to open the gates and allow the English entry.

When both Neil and Lord Fraser continue to claim that Elizabeth and Marjorie are not there, Prince Edward II signals his men to approach to show that they've already captured them. Unhappy with their defiance, the Prince orders Neil to be hanged from the castle gates and is subsequently disemboweled in front of his wife and child. He then slits Lord Fraser's throat himself and orders Robert's wife and daughter be returned to England as hostages.

On the island, Robert is informed of Neil's execution and his family's capture. The desire for revenge burning within him, the outlaw king returns to the mainland and continues to gather resources and allies - eventually coming to the conclusion that fighting the English head-on will only result in defeat as his forces are still dwarfed by their enemy. The Scots instead launch a campaign of guerrilla-warfare, striking English fortifications in small groups and taking the enemy by surprise. After defeating the garrison at his own castle (and setting it ablaze), Robert allows James Douglas to take a handful of men to do the same at his own keep.

Douglas infiltrates his family's castle on Palm Sunday (the Douglas Larder) and during mass when most of the English garrison is praying inside the church he reveals himself and chants "Douglas!" over and over as his men proceed to brutally kill their enemies and set fire to the castle before gathering supporters to his cause and rejoining Robert.

In England, Marjorie is taken away by a nun to serve as a glorified hostage at a convent while Elizabeth's parents are brought to her and with Prince Edward II attempt to convince her to sign a document that forsakes Robert, annuls their marriage, and pardons her for her "crimes" against the crown. When Elizabeth refuses to sign it and laughs at the Prince for his continued inability to capture her husband she's thrown in a metal cage and suspended over the walls.

King Edward I meanwhile continues to become more and more aware of his frailty and failing health. When he receives word of yet another raid by Robert's forces he becomes irate and decides to muster his army and lead them into Scotland himself - intent on ending the rebellion personally just as he had when he defeated William Wallace at Falkirk almost a decade previous.

On the march; however, King Edward I faints and on his deathbed instructs his son to boil his body and carry his bones with him to every battle he fights against the Scottish. As the King succumbs to dysentery the Prince's final words to his father are not loving as he mocks him and claims that the reason why his father treated him so poorly was because he knew his son was much stronger than himself and he was afraid of that strength. Before leaving his dead father's tent, Edward II instructs his men to bury the late King's body there and now - dismissing his last request.

As the English draw closer and closer Robert decides to finally meet them in a pitched battle rather than continue to run and hide. Despite his men's uncertainty they choose to put their faith in their King and go about preparations - choosing a swampy battlefield to meet the English on and constructing large ditches filled with sharpened stakes to surprise the English heavy cavalry.

James Douglas is tasked with intercepting the Prince and offering them battle at the designated spot and the two forces meet on the field the next day: the English numbering in the thousands while Robert's army is barely above five-hundred strong (the Battle of Loudoun Hill). Eager to prove himself and secure his position as the new King of England, Edward II orders de Valence and many of his heavy cavalry to charge Robert's waiting army. Too late do the English see the traps set for them and as both horses and knights fall victim to the stake-lined pits a brutal muddy melee ensues. Even after Edward II himself enters the battle with the remainder of his men the Scots continue to cut down Englishmen and soon send them into a rout.

Once more, Robert and Edward II duel with the former emerging victorious. Battered and begging for help, Edward II is spared by Robert and allowed to retreat with what's left of his army as the Scottish King claims his first major victory against the English.

In an epilogue sequence it's revealed that Edward II would return to England and be made King only to be murdered by his nobles years later. James Douglas would go on to earn the nickname "the Black Douglas" and earn his family's lands back while Angus MacDonald would be made Lord of the Isles. Elizabeth is eventually set free in a prisoner exchange and rejoins Robert and Marjorie, and three-hundred years later one of Robert's descendants, James VI would be crowned King of Scotland and England.

In early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne.

Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne's ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen's companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfill her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

Against the backdrop of the costly War of the Spanish Succession in early-eighteenth-century England, the mud-covered former aristocrat, Abigail Hill, arrives at the palace with nothing, to beg for a job. However, with an ailing Queen Anne mostly tending to her furry herd of rabbits and the petulant monarch's faithful confidante, Sarah Churchill, subtly running the country, it won't be long before the castle's newest scullery maid spots a golden opportunity to restore her status. Now--amid rapacious ambition, creative emotional manipulation, and hidden personal agendas--the ferocious female antagonists have no other option but to wage a silent war for the attention of the sad empress; nevertheless, what will it take to become Queen Anne's favourite?

The power dynamic between three women in the royal house of England in the early eighteenth century is presented, it during a time when England is at war with France. The first is Queen Anne, the current ruler. She tries to overcome her insecurities, paranoia and potential perceived weakness in being lame by that outward power of being ruler. The second is Sarah, Lady Marlborough, the Queen's trusted lady-in-waiting and the wife to Lord Marlborough, the head of the British military. The third is Abigail Hill, Sarah's cousin whose family has fallen on hard times and who Sarah hires to work in the royal palace in various roles as a domestic. The Queen's motivation is to appear that she is in charge while desperately wanting to feel loved by those she loves in return. Sarah's motivation is to implement her desired policies especially with regard to the war. Abigail's motivation is to regain her status as a lady in not wanting to feel at the mercy of poverty ever again. Others try to exploit this dynamic, especially Harley, the leader of the opposition in Parliament, he who feels that he does not have the ear of the Queen at this important time of war.

Lady Sarah's cousin Abigail comes to the palace, hoping for a job. She used to have status but has fallen on hard times. With Lady Sarah's help Abigail gets a job as a maid. Part I: This Mud Stinks

In the early 18th century, c. 1708, England is at war with the French. The middle-aged Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) is extremely frail, constantly ill and temperamental, but has her closest ally in Sarah (Rachel Weisz), her childhood friend and advisor. Sarah is measured and intelligent, and helps Anne make most of her war-time decisions.

Meanwhile, Sarah's cousin, Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives at the Queen's estate via carriage. She is shoved by another rider on the way out and falls into filth, and when she enters the castle, the maids play a trick on her and send her to meet her cousin smelling atrocious. Abigail's father has fallen from grace onto extremely hard times and Abigail is desperate for a job. Unimpressed, Sarah gets her a job in the downstairs, where she shares a room with all the other maids. The other maids bully her, even tricking her into touching lye with her bare hands, burning her right hand.

Meanwhile, Robert Harley (Nicholas Hoult), a local politician with Parliament, is desperate to stop the war. But Sidney Godolphin (James Smith) argues the opposite to the Queen, insisting that the fight must continue. Sarah, who holds the most power to influence Anne's opinion, convinces Anne to double the tax on the citizens to pay for the new phase of the war, and Harley is furious.

One night, Anne has an extremely terrible attack of gout and is screaming in pain. Abigail steals a horse and goes out into the forest, picking herbs to ease Anne's pain. While there, she makes eye contact with the handsome Samuel Masham (Joe Alwyn) but plays coy. She lies her way into Anne's chamber to apply her remedy, but Sarah catches her and orders her to be lashed. However the remedy works and Sarah stops the beating after only a few strokes and speaks with Abigail. She's impressed and takes on Abigail as her assistant. With this promotion, Abigail gets her own room away from the other maids. Abigail reveals that previously, her father had lost her in a bet to an old German man who she was forced to be with, and she will do anything to get out of that life. Abigail also coughs loudly in front of Anne, making sure to explain she caught a cold from picking her healing herbs.

Part II: I Do Fear Confusion and Accidents

At a grand party, Harley tries to talk with Anne about not continuing the war, but can never get her out from under Sarah, while at the same time, Abigail sneaks into Anne's chambers to take books. When Sarah has a dance with Masham, Anne grows agitated and demands Sarah take her back to her chambers. She slaps Sarah, angrily, who apologizes. They enter Anne's chamber and begin to have sex, to the shock of Abigail, who flees without being seen.

Part III: What an Outfit

John (Mark Gatiss), Sarah's husband, leaves to lead the ongoing battle in the war. Sarah is worried but resolved. Over a round of shooting, Abigail asks Sarah how she can be alright with her husband being in such grave danger. Sarah explains that she believes this is what is best for the country and she has prepared herself to pay the price; she notes that Abigail understands this, having given herself over to the German.

Part IV: A Minor Hitch

Harley approaches Abigail and asks her to spy on Sarah and Anne, and bring him anything he can use to help him curry favor with the Queen. Abigail declares she'll do no such thing and tells Sarah about it, who is unfazed. Sarah becomes busy with matters of state and making decisions, and sends Abigail to socialize with and watch after Anne. Although Anne at first is not interested in Abigail, Abigail bonds with her by asking about her rabbits. She has seventeen, one for every child she's lost. Anne softens to Abigail, and spends more and more time with her. One evening, Sarah enters Anne's chambers and finds Abigail naked in bed with Anne, sleeping after they've had sex. Enraged, the next day she hurls books at Abigail, accusing her of being a schemer, and fires her outright from Anne's service. Abigail, shaken, takes a book and bashes herself in the face with it until her nose is bloody, then waits outside Anne's chambers and cries.

Part V: What If I Should Fall Asleep and Slip Under?

The next day, Sarah sees Abigail still in Anne's employ. Queen Anne tells Sarah she is not fired because she likes having her around... and likes sleeping with her. The three travel together awkwardly. Sarah takes Anne aside and tells her that enough is enough, she's made her point, but Anne confesses she likes having everyone vying for her affection.

Sensing Sarah and Anne's non-wavering bond, Abigail meets with Harley, and agrees to help him, in exchange for a favor. She wants to marry Masham, with whom she has had a continuous flirtation. Harley knows she can never do that, because she's not of noble birth but promises to make it happen, and Abigail meets him in the House of Parliament, telling him that the Queen is going to double the tax, and promises to get him meetings with Anne unaccompanied by Sarah. With that information, he is able to ambush Anne before her speech and goes onto to deliver his own speech, thanking her for not cutting the tax and ending the war to which the room erupts in cheers. Pressured by that, Anne faints, unsure of what else to do. Sarah knows someone must have gotten to Harley and set them up.

Abigail gets more herbs from the garden and poisons Sarah's tea. Sarah then goes out for a horseback ride, and when the poison takes affect, she passes out and is dragged violently by her horse out into the country. The whole estate is concerned about Sarah's disappearance, but Anne suspects she might be faking it for attention, jealous of her getting close to Abigail. Sarah is found bruised, bloodied and unconscious outside a brothel.

Part VI: Stop Infection

With Sarah gone, Anne is easily influenced. Harley lets her in on the fact that Abigail and Masham have been romancing one another, and Anne insists they be married. In order to make that happen, she makes Abigail a Lady. Abigail and Masham are married in a private ceremony. Then together, Abigail and Harley also weaken Anne's resolve on the issue of the war. Queen Anne also begins to worry that something serious may have happened to Sarah.

Meanwhile, Sarah awakens in the brothel with a massive scar on her left cheek from her injuries. She demands to be released, and initially they refuse, but she sends word to her contacts to bring money and is let go. When she returns, she is appalled to see Abigail is now a Lady. She slaps her across the face and then returns to her chambers and finds old letters from Queen Anne.

Part VII: Leave That, I Like It

Sarah (now wearing a black scarf around the left of her face to hide her ugly scar) goes to Anne and tells her that she needs to continue the war, double the tax, and remove Abigail from her service and move her away from them. Anne balks, and Sarah tells Anne if she doesn't she will release to the press, the love letters that she wrote to Sarah, causing a huge scandal. Anne is deeply betrayed.

Feeling guilty for threatening Anne, Sarah burns the letters however she is quickly informed that she needs to return her keys to Anne's chambers and that she is being removed from the castle. Sarah apologizes outside Anne's door, explaining she burned the letters, but Anne doesn't acknowledge her. Sarah moves to a different estate.

Part VIII: I Dreamt I Stabbed You In The Eye

With Sarah gone, Abigail has free reign, and spends her free days partying with the upper class and reluctantly tending to Anne, who by this time has suffered a stroke and is partly paralyzed on the entire left side of her body. At the same time, Anne is beginning to falter on the issue of the war with Harley and Abigail constantly influencing her. Sidney wonders if Sarah would have a different opinion, but Anne balks. When he brings up the idea of Sarah sending her an apology, Anne shows some interest but behaves as if it doesn't matter to her. Sidney goes to Sarah and convinces her to mend fences with Anne and write her a letter. Sensing Anne's pining for Sarah, Abigail lies and tells her that she's looked at the books and it seems that Sarah and John were stealing from her. Anne absolutely doesn't believe her. Anne gets more and more upset waiting for the letter from Sarah. It finally arrives at the estate, but Abigail intercepts and burns it.

Later, Harley is trying to convince Anne to remove John from the military. Sidney is aghast, since John just won for them, but Anne declares that John has been stealing from them and orders him removed, and the war ended. She insists that John and Sarah be banished from the country. Sarah and John are at home when troops arrive outside their place and Sarah sees them through the window.

In the final scene, as Anne sleeps in her chambers, Abigail steps on one of the rabbits, pressing down on it with her foot. Anne stirs and she lets the rabbit go. Anne then orders her to come take care of her, and Abigail, subservient again, rubs the queens legs as the rabbits move around.

The story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that we still feel today.

Governor George W. Bush of Texas picks Dick Cheney, the CEO of Halliburton Co, to be his Republican running mate in the 2000 presidential election. No stranger to politics, Cheney's impressive resume includes stints as White House chief of staff, House Minority Whip and defense secretary. When Bush wins by a narrow margin, Cheney begins to use his newfound power to help reshape the country and the world.

From being a Yale University dropout doing odd jobs in early-1960s Wyoming, Dick Cheney decides to take back control of his life, after his sweetheart and future wife Lynne Cheney's urgent ultimatum. As an intern during Richard Nixon's administration, Cheney grabs the opportunity to join the staff of his mentor, Donald Rumsfeld, who takes him under his wing, paving the way to rise through the ranks of the White House. After losing his job during Jimmy Carter's presidency, Cheney reluctantly accepts George W. Bush's proposal to be his running mate--a decision that would grant him the power to pull the strings of foreign policy, especially after the fateful and devastating 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The political life of Dick Cheney, culminating with his Vice-presidency in the George W. Bush administration from 2000 to 2008, is presented, that political life largely supported by his equally ambitious wife, Lynne Cheney. Their political ambitions were generally hindered by his less than charismatic demeanor which most politicians require to succeed. Those politics drifted into the right side of the spectrum rather than moving to the right by a deliberately ideological choice. But being elected the sole House representative from their home state of Wyoming under the Republican banner led to ultimate thoughts of the top job in the White House. A number of factors kiboshed those thoughts, including how to protect his daughter Mary Cheney, who had just come out as lesbian, from public scrutiny while reconciling his support for Mary against the strong social conservative base of the Republican Party. The Cheneys' political fortunes changed when Dick, in the private sector as CEO of Halliburton, was asked by relatively inexperienced W. Bush to be his running mate. In this process, Dick began a manipulation of the system to his benefit where in his position of eventual VP he was able to be a more powerful politician working quietly and clandestinely behind the scenes than if he was actual president in the continual spotlight.

Synopsis Vice 2018

After a quick shot of a very young Dick Cheney (Christian Bale) getting pulled over for driving drunk, we see the day of 9/11 - in an underground White House bunker, Cheney gives the authorization to shoot down any aircraft deemed a threat... on "presidential authority." A narrator (voice of Jesse Plemons) explains that most people have no idea how one man came to so much power, changing history and affecting millions of lives.

The narrator takes us back decades in the 1970s, to young Dick and Lynne (Amy Adams) Cheney. Lynne was a top student, but Dick got kicked out of Yale after drinking too much. After bailing him out of jail, Lynne yells at him to get his life together. Lynne's father was a drunk who abused her mother, and she refuses to sign up for the same life. She wants him to be something. Dick becomes a congressional intern who starts working for the obnoxious Donald Rumsfeld (Steve Carrell), an old-school boys club type. The two become very close until Rumsfeld is sent off as an ambassador because of his conflicts with the Nixon White House. Meanwhile, Lynne's mother mysteriously drowns, and it seems like it may have been a domestic violence incident, though no charges are filed. Dick tells Lynne's father never to come near them again.

Once Watergate happens, and Nixon is out, Rumsfeld, as one of the few Republicans not involved, is brought back and made Secretary of Defense for President Gerald Ford. Dick becomes Chief of Staff. Cheney meets with young Antonin Scalia to learn about a legal theory called the Unitary Executive Theory, essentially saying anything the President does is legal simply because he or she is the President. Cheney holds this theory close. But before he can implement it, Carter wins the next presidential election, and everyone is out of a job.

Back in Wyoming, Dick runs for Congress but has a heart attack in the middle of his campaign. Lynne goes on many campaign stops and rallies in his place, and he eventually wins the race. After winning, he is able to do things repeal the fairness doctrine that required news outlets to show both sides of the argument, which led to Fox News. At a party, the Cheneys talk with George Bush Sr. and notice his drunk, "black sheep" son George W. (Sam Rockwell).

Meanwhile, Mary Cheney (Alison Pill), one of Dick's two daughters, gets into a car accident after running out of school. When her parents ask her why she left, she explains she had a fight with her girlfriend - she's gay. Despite being a little uncomfortable, Dick supports Mary unconditionally.

After Bush's presidency in 1992, Cheney considers running for President, but his polling numbers are terrible, so he becomes the CEO of Halliburton for many years until, in 1999, George W. calls him to ask him to be his Vice President. At their meeting, Dick declines but offers to help him find a running mate. When George asks again, Dick says he wants more power than a typical Vice President - he wants to oversee major departments. He also says his daughter Mary is off-limits. George agrees. After the 2000 election is incredibly close, the supreme court - with Antonin Scalia - stops the recount, and they win the election.

Dick sets up his operation in the white house: total oversight, including getting the intelligence briefings before George. He does work getting tax breaks for the wealthy and stopping environmental efforts. Then 9/11 happens. Dick meets with his lawyer while in the bunker: Iraq has many oil-rich areas. Intelligence points to Al Qaeda (in Afghanistan) being responsible, but Rumsfeld and Cheney seize the opportunity to bring up Sadaam in Iraq. Colin Powell (Tyler Perry) points out Iraq has nothing to do with the attacks, but Dick finds this unimportant.

Dick meets with John Yoo, a lawyer who has an opinion that the US can monitor all citizens and also asserts that if the US commits any act, it cannot be torture - so the US resumes torture activities and outside-the-lines actions such as Guantanamo Bay. Using a sketchy, unreliable source, Dick begins pushing the narrative that Sadaam has weapons of mass destruction. The American people still don't see a connection between Al Qaeda and Iraq, so the cabinet asks Colin Powell, who has the highest trustworthiness ratings, to give a speech pushing this narrative. He resists but eventually gives in. Since an Iraqi enemy of Sadaam's, Zarqawi, had a meeting with Bin Laden, they claim this is proof, and Powell mentions this over and over in his speech. Thus began the Iraq War. Cheney and Halliburton get sizable contracts.

Around this time, Dick accidentally shoots his friend while hunting and never apologizes, and then leaks undercover agent Valerie Plame's identity after her journalist husband publishes a piece questioning the war in Iraq. Zarqawi, who has gained power because of the US making him a major celebrity, starts ISIS. No weapons of mass destruction are found in Iraq. After the war crimes come out, Dick calls Rumsfeld and tells him he's being forced out. Later, Dick has yet another heart problem in need of a heart transplant. As the narrator explains this, he is hit by a car, and his heart is given to Dick.

Liz Cheney (Lily Rabe), Dick's other daughter, is running for his old Wyoming seat and is behind in the polls because she has hedged on gay marriage. She doesn't know what to do and goes to her parents for counsel - and they give her permission to do what she needs to do. She then goes on TV and says she does not support gay marriage. Mary is enraged and devastated.

During an interview, a reporter questions Dick on his practices, but he shows no remorse, saying he did what needed to be done to protect the American people. Post-script indicates the number of people (soldiers and civilians) who have died as a result of all those wars and due to ISIS. Halliburton stock rose 500%. The Bush-Cheney White House claimed to have lost 22 million incriminating e-mails.

A mid-credits scene depicts a focus group descending into chaos when a conservative panelist slams the film itself as biased and attacks a liberal panelist who defends the movie and insults him, while another younger panelist expresses her anticipation for the next ''Fast & Furious'' movie.

Synopsis Mary Queen of Scots 2018

In 1561, Mary (Saoirse Ronan), Queen of Scotland and former Queen Consort of France, returns from France to her half-brother the Earl of Moray's (James McArdle) home in Scotland after her husband's death. In England, her cousin, Elizabeth (Margot Robbie) is the Queen of England - she is unmarried and has no child, and is threatened by Mary's claim to the English throne. John Knox (David Tennant), a Protestant cleric on Mary's council, is incensed about a Catholic being in charge of the country and is abusive to Mary.

Elizabeth wants to control Mary and weaken her claim to the throne and thinks the best way to do this would be to marry her to an English subject. She is herself in love with Robert Dudley (Joe Alwyn) but decides to offer him to Mary. He protests, only wanting to be with her, but Elizabeth sends him anyway. However, once she meets with Dudley, Mary refuses to marry him, since he is a commoner and not royal - unless she is named as the next in line to the English throne. Elizabeth balks but is stricken with smallpox. Hearing of her impending death, Mary agrees to marry Dudley - once she is named the successor. Elizabeth, not genuinely wanting to let Dudley go, sends Lord Darnley (Jack Lowden) to Scotland. He claims to only be there for religious freedom, but Mary knows this is not true. He is charming, however, and their bond grows until eventually, he proposes.

Because Darnley has royal blood, he actually strengthens Mary's claim to the throne, and Elizabeth's advisers tell her to put a stop to the marriage and press the marriage of Dudley to Mary. Mary's council itself is also suspicious of Darnley's motives, assuming that he wants to take over their country on behalf of England. The English ambassador comes to Scotland and demands that Darnley return to England, but Mary refuses, since she's doing as asked and marrying an Englishman. This enrages Moray, who doesn't want to go to war over his sister's passion. He leaves the Queen's council.

England supports Moray in a rebellion against Mary. Mary and Darnley marry, but the next morning Mary finds him in bed with her male friend David Rizzio (Ismael Cruz Cordova). She is upset but has a rebellion by some Scottish nobles to deal with. Rizzio goes to Mary, sorry and begging for forgiveness - Mary does indeed forgive him, saying they both fell for Darnley's charms and that they must be careful. Mary's forces are able to quash the rebellion, and she spares Moray's life. She then forces Darnley to have sex with her so that she can conceive an heir. When she announces her pregnancy, she declares the child the "heir to Scotland and England," which naturally greatly offends the English.

Moray meets with Darnley's father Matthew (Brendan Coyle) to hatch a plan to undermine Mary. A rumor starts that Rizzio is actually the father of Mary's child and that she is an adulterer, which gives Knox fuel to preach to the Scottish that Mary is an evil woman. The under-miners meet with Darnley, telling him he needs to sign the bond for their plan to remove Rizzio. He refuses, but his father warns him that in the public perception either he is the adulterer or Mary is, and this way no one needs to know of his homosexuality. He reluctantly signs. Mary, her handmaids, and Rizzio are playing games upstairs when the plotters burst in to execute Rizzio. Mary physically stands in the way but is unable to stop them as they stab Rizzio over and over, to her horror. The nobles insist that Darnley deliver the killer blow.

The nobles bring Moray back into the fold, and they demand pardons for all the rebels. Mary wants to know if Darnley knew of the plot and they tell her he signed a bond. She agrees to the pardon if they can prove Darnley knew, and they agree. She makes peace with Moray. She writes to Elizabeth, asking her to be the godmother. They strike a deal: if Elizabeth has children, they will be heirs to the throne, but if not, it will be Mary's child - much to the chagrin of Elizabeth's council. Mary confronts Darnley with his signature on the bond and banishes him from her sight. He is angry, wanting to be with his child, but she tells him he is lucky to keep his life. Mary's council begs her to divorce him, claiming that he still plots to take the throne, but she refuses to be a queen who keeps getting married over and over. The council approaches Bothwell (Martin Compston) an advisor and protector of Mary's, and they all arrange to have Darnley killed.

In the ensuing melee after Darnley's death, Mary is forced to leave her child with her maids and flee. The very next day, Bothwell tells her that the council says she needs to marry a Scotsman as soon as possible and they have decided on him. Mary doesn't want to, but faced with seemingly no choice, she goes through with it. This gives Knox more fuel to preach that Mary is a harlot and that she had Darnley killed herself. Moray and other advisers tell Mary she must abdicate and that the country does not trust her. Bothwell is furious, but Mary tells him he's a fool - this was their plan all along to remove her. Moray begs her to abdicate so they can be a family. Mary says he's holding her son hostage, and that they are no longer family. She refuses to abdicate.

Elizabeth is sad to hear of what has been happening, and the two cousins arrange a clandestine meeting. Elizabeth tells Mary no one can know of the meeting. Mary asks for help getting her throne back, but Elizabeth tells her she cannot go to war on a Catholic's behalf. Mary offers to make obeisance to Elizabeth but Elizabeth sadly still refuses, but says that she is safe in England. Elizabeth tells Mary as long as she does not aid England's enemies, she will be unharmed. Mary says if she does so, it will only be because Elizabeth pushed her there, and if she murders Mary, she murders her own sister queen. Elizabeth orders Mary to be imprisoned in England.

Some years later, Elizabeth receives evidence that indicates Mary conspired with her enemies to kill her. She doesn't know if it is true but has no choice but to act, and orders Mary's execution. Elizabeth cries for Mary. Mary is taken to her execution and reveals a scarlet dress, the colour of martyrdom. In her last thoughts, she wishes her son James well and hopes for peace upon his reign.

The postscript tells us that upon Elizabeth's death in 1603, James became the first monarch to rule both England and Scotland.
